The book retraces and analyses discussions around “Gypsies” in the period going from Humanism to Romanticism. The relationship of known and unknown authors with the construction of a peculiar alterity, that of the “Gypsy”, comes to light in the sphere of a difficult struggle for identity. This construction has persisted over the years , but sudden changes, like the one that occurred between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when “good for a laugh” Gypsies were replaced with “good for a cry” Gypsies, also came about.
