Curriculum

Emanuela Piccolo is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Intercultural Studies, University of Verona. Her current research in intercultural education approaches interculturality as a site of democratic contestation, examining how the vocabularies of inclusion and competence can depoliticise difference. This work extends a longer-standing inquiry, rooted in critical political and international theory, into norm contestation and the depoliticising logics of liberal governance.

She holds a PhD in World Politics with distinction from the University of Helsinki (2020). Her doctoral research on norm contestation, international institutions and the depoliticising logics of liberal governance received the Raimo Väyrynen Fund Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation and formed the basis of her monograph published by Springer in 2022.

Her research examines how normative and institutional orders are constituted, stabilised and contested, including how liberal forms of governance translate questions of power, inequality and conflict into apparently neutral or depoliticised frameworks. Her current research develops this problematic through intercultural education, focusing on inclusion as one of the key vocabularies through which political contestation can be displaced into the management of difference. Against approaches that treat interculturality primarily as a technique for accommodating diversity within existing institutional arrangements, she approaches it as a site of democratic contestation: a space in which dominant norms, categories and institutional structures can themselves be rendered visible, challenged and reworked.

A sustained concern with norm production, depoliticisation and contestation connects her research on international institutions and intercultural education across different sites of liberal governance. Her research in intercultural education is developed through the Horizon Europe projects INTRACOMP and METEOR, for which she serves as Project Manager at the University of Verona.

Alongside her academic work, she advises international NGOs, public institutions and local authorities on international programme and project design, implementation and evaluation. Her experience spans Horizon Europe, ERDF-supported urban programmes (UIA, EUI and URBACT), and international education and civil-society initiatives, with particular expertise in integrated and participatory approaches to welfare, urban policy and social inclusion. Her wider professional and activist trajectory is grounded in long-standing collaboration across academic, policy and civil-society networks, including extensive work in Palestine and the wider Middle East. This experience provides an important point of connection between her critical scholarship and the institutional, political and civil-society settings in which questions of inclusion, power and contestation are negotiated in practice.
