The short course aims to offer a synthetic framework of the main schools of economic thought - both orthodox and heterodox - that currently confront each other. It does so by presenting not only contemporary ideas, but their evolution over the last five centuries: from the modern age to nowadays. At the beginning, some topics of philosophy of science are mentioned, with particular attention to the characteristics of economics vs. to other sciences: characteristics considered useful for understanding the evolution of its thought.
1. The segmentation of the sciences, and the case of economics
2. Scientific paradigms and schools of economic thought
2. Mercantilism
3. The Physiocrats
4. The Classics
5. The Marginalists and Neoclassics
6. The Keynesians and recent developments
Classroom lectures, with discussions and interactions, during the presentation of the topics.
