This course is designed to address the needs of students preparing to teach Italian as a Second Language in multilingual nursery and primary schools. Students will learn about current theoretical bases for second-language acquisition and how theory informs classroom practice. Together with principles of learning, the course presents a repertoire of teaching practices from which future teachers can draw as they make decisions about instruction. Students also explore the crucial role played by the teacher in a multilingual class, investigate the role of language as a key factor in identity formation and analyze how language informs mental processes of representation and categorization.
