Learning outcomes

This workshop is designed to help participants acquire certain intercultural competencies:
- gaining an awareness of one’s own preconceptions and other viewpoints
- developing skills in listening, dialogue and welcoming
- gaining an awareness, and reflecting on the characteristics of intercultural schools

Syllabus

session I
Presentation of the workshop: objectives, methodology, rules

Opening film: The Women on the 6th Floor (section/scene?)

- icebreaker, covering expectations based on the title and brief group reflection
- film viewing
- work in small groups on the issues that have emerged with refresher covering taught material

- Inter-group reflection on the issues that have emerged during the film and on the initial experience

- Exercise: “The time I felt I was different”

1. Individual stories (written): “The time I felt I was different”
2. In pairs: reading over the stories
3. In groups of 10-12: each person reads his or her partner’s story
4. Inter-group reflection: what are our experiences of diversity? What do you experience when you hear the accounts of others, and what is it like to hear your own account read to the group?


Presentation of the end-of-workshop group presentation assignment:
the students examine and analyse data collected by an empirical micro-research study (interview) with teachers currently in service (and at least 5 years’ experience). One interview per student.

session II
A. Group-based activities:
case studies of young children in school settings (the Chinese child – mediation; other examples from Reggio & Santerini, etc.)

Inter-group discussion: reflecting on the cases examined in the groups and analysing which competencies were engaged and which were absent.

B. In small groups, reading and analysing the government publication: Guidelines for receiving pupils who are not Italian citizens.
What competencies are needed by teachers in pre-school and primary school education?


Inter-group discussion: presenting and sharing the outcomes of this analysis in terms of necessary procedures and required competencies.

Task: writing and creative communication with the rest of the group (3 minutes, communication)

session III
Working in small groups on the interviews conducted:

• What emotions accompanied this experience?
• What are the most meaningful aspects to emerge from this meeting with the teacher?
• What observations arose from conducting the interview?

Final report

GROUP REPORT ON THE INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED WITH THE TEACHERS COMPARE WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS PRESENT IN THE TRAINING PROGRAMME.
A COPY OF EACH GROUP’S REPORT WILL BE FORWARDED TO COURSE LEADER PROF. PAOLA DUSI
