Learning outcomes

The course, through an interdisciplinary approach, promotes the knowledge of contemporary Italian and international children’s literature, and the reflection about the problems and the educational perspectives about literacy in order to support the “pleasure of reading”.


The course take two modules:
Children and young Literature: the uniqueness of Children’s Literature; the origins and the developments of children’s literature (18th- 19th); the different aspects of contemporary Italian and international children’s literature (writers, illustrators, genres; themes, characters, style); the voices of the most important Italian writers; the criteria for evaluation of fiction books for children and young readers; picture-books and illustrated books: definition, typology, themes, relationship between words and images; the difference between didactic and creative text; pedagogical and aesthetical approaches to children’s literature; introduction to “classics”, like Collodi’s Pinocchio or the books of Astrid Lindren or the books of Gianni Rodari, analyzing themes, characters and writing style.

Reading and education: the problems about literacy in the contemporary multimedia society; the factors limiting reading habit; a new kind of reader; skills necessary for children and young people to become a critical and reflexive reader; children needs and intrinsic motivation to read; the pleasure of reading (types an levels); reading aloud as essential part of reading promotion; the difference between “reading education” and “reading promotion”.

1) S. Blezza Picherle, Libri, bambini, ragazzi. Incontri tra educazione e letteratura, Vita e Pensiero, Milano 2005 (give special attention to chapters VII, VIII and IX)
2) S. Blezza Picherle (edited by), Rileggendo Astrid Lindgren. Percorsi critici e itinerari interpretativi, Del Cerro, Tirrenia-Pisa 2008 (just the issues of Silvia Blezza Picherle, Roberta Silva and Fernando Rotondo).
3) Duplicate lecture notes made up of issues which will be available (at the end of the course) at the Department Library and on line.
4) S. Blezza Picherle, Diventare lettori oggi. Problemi e prospettive, Libreria Editrice Universitaria, Verona 2007.
5) Critical analysis of a children’s literature novel, which will be delivered, in a write form, with the written examination. The list of novels and the criteria analysis will be advised during the course and will be published on line.
Some example of paper will be available at the lecturer office.

For not attending students:
For not attending student will be necessary to integrate with the chapter IX (Da un secolo all’altro – 1970 – 2009) of P. Boero, C. De Luca, La Letteratura per l’infanzia, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2009 (new edition).

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of two-hours’ written text based on argumentative and reflexive open-questions.
