Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing students to the study of motivation and emotions, as psychological functions regulating human behaviour. Knowing the basic concepts in these fields will help the students to understand the role of affectivity in human behavior. Moreover, the course will also focus on the relationship between “inner” and “outer” world, seen through Solms & Turnbull’s perspective; special attention will be given (a) to what the psycoanalytic and the neuroscientific approaches may have in common with reference to the science of mind and (b) to how they may both contribute to shedding light on human emotions and motivation.

Syllabus

Course topics:
• Dynamic psychology and motivational systems
• Istincts, drives, needs and the person-environment relationship
• Motivation and motive: Achievement motivation, Leadership motivation and Affiliation motivation
• Intrinsic motivation: the Flow experience and Sensation seeking
• Volition and Decision making
• Implicit motives and Self-attributed motives
• Motivation assessment
• Subjective wellbeing and positive emotions: fitting motives and goals
• The “inner world” and “outer world” relation in accordance with Solms & Turnbull’s perspective
• Emotions and motivation as interdependent concepts
• Feelings and emotion expressions; basic notions about emotions’ fisiology; main theories about emotions
• Emotions and motivation: basic notions about new researches in neurosciences.
At the beginning of the course students will be informed on a seminar about an emotional issue.
