The course aims to develop a philosophical point of view on painting, not merely an “aesthetic” one, but one that also focuses on painting effects on percepetual habits.

Paint the Life: reflections on painting by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The course will examine some of the most significant writings, which the French philosopher Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) dedicated to the art of painting, and in particular to the art of Cézanne. The concepts of the “flesh” the “world” and the “mirror” will receive particular emphasis. The practice of painting (particularly contemporary painting) will appear as a kind of re-writing of the perceptual experience that structures in a new way the relationship between subject and environment-world. The course will put under examination various other concepts, which play a critical, though unperceived, role in our understanding the works of art – such concepts as: imitation, good taste, primitivism, narcissism.
