The course will provide a basis in the history of the discipline and a critical approach to the methods and theories developed in different times for the study of cultural diversity. The course aims to develop empathy, to undermine stereotypical thinking and to point up the issues involved in interpreting, in their cultural context, our own and others’ behaviour and attitudes. Attention will be given to the relationship between language and everyday experience especially in educational contexts and to this end the students will carry out exercises in observation and ethnographic description.
