Research methods in the Human Sciences

This area of research studies the main methodological and ethical issues connected with research in the Human Sciences. In addition, this area explores the theories of knowledge and the methods of theoretical, historical and empirical research that make it possible to develop rigorous and scientifically-based knowledge of human and social phenomena that is respectful of both the participants and the complexity of the objects of study.

This area explores the following lines of research:

  • philosophy of knowledge;
  • epistemology and qualitative research methods;
  • quantitative research methods and techniques;
  • research ethics;
  • social network analysis.

Special aspects of education (see  DDC classification)
Think of experience of interior life in adulthood Daniele Loro
The individual grows and becomes an adult from many points of view: biological, legal, social, psychological and working. However, it does not become complete if it does not get to directly experience living not only in relation to others, but also in relation to the deepest part of oneself. The ability to reconcile the two worlds and to make them dialogue in a profitable way, represents the existential task that is specific to adulthood.This research activity is part of the following research line, activated in the Department: "Roots and cultures of contemporaneity: pedagogical theories".
Theory and practice of education (see  DDC classification)
Epistemology of qualitative Inquiry Luigina Mortari
Roberta Silva
In order to fund an empirical rigorous research in the field of the human sciences, it has been elaborated a qualitative epistemology that has as epistemic core: Bateson’s ecology, naturalistic inquiry, phenomenology and pragmatism. A specific attention is devoted to the elaboration of an “empirical phenomenology” (Ep). It has been developed a specific version for the healthcare environment.
Think of education from the philosophical point of view Daniele Loro
Even in the educational field, to act with intentionality and effectiveness is not enough to have knowledge and skills, and commitment and good will are not enough; it is necessary to understand well the existential meaning of educational action and the cognitive specificity of pedagogical knowledge. In this way the cultural, social and even political value of education and pedagogy is affirmed. This research activity is part of the following research line, activated in the Department: "Roots and cultures of contemporaneity: pedagogical theories".

Historical-epistemological Approach Massimiliano Badino
This approach aims at situating historically and culturally classical problems of epistemology with the goal of providing us with a more thorough philosophical analysis of the process of production and dissemination of scientific knowledge
Political Epistemology Massimiliano Badino
Traditionally, epistemology is kept sharply apart from social and political issues. By contrast, political epistemology tackles epistemological problems on the assumption that knowledge production is a situated process occurring within a ethical, social, political, and cultural context. Furthermore, political epistemology reconfigures the key epistemological questions from the standpoint of their impact on society at large.
Practice-based Philosophy of Science Massimiliano Badino
To understand how science works, one needs to work with those who actively make science. Cooperation between humanities and natural sciences is essential for both practitioners and calls for honing of a specific openmindedness, a quick conceptual flexibility and the willingness to transcend one's own mental frameworks.

Biographical Approach Cristina Lonardi
This approach looks at the knowledge of life stories, life paths and experiences of people as a means of analysis of society and its changes and interpretation of social reality, individual but also collective, in the sense that the biographical approach allows access to connections between individual life experiences and social reality, between the strictly individual dimension and the social context.

Design, management, control of both qualitative and quantitative empirical investigations; statistical analysis and interpretation of data; prospective analysis.
Qualitative Research Cristina Lonardi
In the social sciences, qualitative research refers to theories on interpretation (hermeneutics) and individual experience (phenomenology). Strategies for systematic collection, organization and interpretation of textual material obtained from qualitative interviews or through observation are many and varied. The aim is to investigate the meaning of social phenomena, as experienced by the individuals themselves. Here we mean both the use of qualitative research techniques and the study, in-depth study and experimentation of qualitative techniques, even in the web environment.
