Marcella Milana is Associate professor of general and social education at the Departmen of Human Sciences, and since 2019, Honorary professor of adult education at the University of Nottingham, School of Education (United Kingdom). She has lived, worked and carried out research in North America (United States), Latin America (Argentina, Brazil) and Europe (Denmark, Italy).
Expert in adult education and lifelong learning, her research interests focus on education policies and governance - at local, national, regional and global levels, and in a comparative perspective, for this reason she draws on multidisciplinary knowledge and collaborates also with sociologists and experts in political science. Methodologically she believes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods are all needed, but is mostly devoted to qualitative research.
She contributes to the Department research area "Inclusive societies and citizenship practices” with her research agenda, which considers the changes in educational policies (under neoliberalism) and the growing complexity of governance processes at European and international level. These, in fact, constantly question the role that adult education and training play in relation to the promotion and inclusion of individuals and groups, active citizenship, and the well-being of contemporary societies.
Furthermore, she supports research internationally as Chair of the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults (ESREA), joint convenor of the ESREA Network on Policy Studies on Adult Education, and Network 23 (Policy Studies and Politics of Education) under the European Educational Research Association (EERA). She also supports research communication as Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Lifelong Education (Taylor & Francis) and the book series Studies in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning (Palgrave Macmillan / Springer).
