Curriculum

Manuela Lavelli is a full professor of Developmental and Educational Psychology at the Department of Human Sciences. Her research program investigates how the quality of caregiver-infant/child interaction, in conjunction with individual and cultural factors, shapes individual developmental trajectories. In particular, her research focuses on: (1) the mutually regulated processes organizing early mother-infant communication, which lay the foundation of infant emotional development; (2) the effects of linguistic input and support provided by caregivers during interactions with young children with atypical or at-risk language development (DLD, CIs, low-income and/or immigrant families) on child language abilities. Her research is published in international journals, some in top-tier journals, and have implications for developing and implementing intervention programs for parents and teachers of children with developmental vulnerabilities. Currently she has active international research partnerships and she coordinates the PhD program in Human Sciences.

Research groups

SLD-Group, Research Group on Social & Language Development
The Research Group focuses on early social and language developmental processes.
Research interests
Topic Description Research area
Language acquisition and development The research investigates the interaction between individual and contextual factors -particularly linguistic input and support provided by parents and teachers- in child language acquisition and development in typical, atypical (DLD, CIs) and at-risk (low-income, immigrant) populations. Childhood, family, and social networks
Psychology, Developmental
Infant research The research investigates the first processes of infant mental development by focusing on the dynamic of mother(father)-infant communication in the very first months of life. The analysis is aimed mainly to shed light on factors underlying individual differences in developmental trajectories. Cross-cultural studies and studies with at-risk populations (very preterm infants) are included. Childhood, family, and social networks
Psychology, Developmental
Methods to study change processes Specific research methods (referred to as microgenetic designs) that use multiple case study and combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses to allow the researcher to closely observe processes of change, instead of products, in individual and relational development. Childhood, family, and social networks
Psychology, Developmental
