Investing in corporate wellness programs can result in a return on investment (ROI) ranging from 100 percent to 600 percent of the initial investment. This was found by Leonard Berry (2010), a marketing professor at Texas A&M University, in a study of ten organizations that implemented employee wellness interventions. The return on the initial investment comes from increased employee engagement, retention, and performance, which is driven by improvements in employees’ perceived well-being. Despite solid empirical evidence, the pressure to meet profit targets can cause managers in many organizations to focus on business objectives and neglect well-being at work, which is often considered of secondary importance.
The current line of research aims to improve scientific knowledge in the study of indicators and mediators of occupational well-being in organizations. To this end, the project aims to apply the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R: Demerouti, Bakker, Nachreiner and Schaufeli, 2001; Bakker and Demerouti, 2007) within specific organizational contexts. The JD-R model is of particular interest in the field of application because it makes it possible to recognize the uniqueness and specific characteristics of each work environment, which are indispensable elements in determining the state of well-being of employees. The most accredited lines of research (Bakker & Demerouti, 2007) dwell on the importance of including the role of workers’ resources in the model. This factor can determine the emergence of specific organizational outcomes such as work engagement. Thus, this line of research aims to study and identify how certain factors (work and personal) affect the quality of organizational life by analyzing the role of specific characteristics of the work environment in contributing to the improvement of the work experience of employees of organizations.
