The course offers a complete view of the sociological debate on the concept of generation. After the presentation of this concept, the course addresses intergenerational solidarity and intergenerational equity. It provides some useful skills for exploring and understanding empirical research into relations between generations. In particular, using anthropological, demographic, sociological, and psychological analysis as a starting point, it tries to identify the special nature of sociological research into intergenerational relations.
First part: 1. The concept of generation in sociology; 2. Exchanges between generations: solidarity and conflict; 3. The concept of intergenerational equity. Second part: 1. Demographic processes; 2. Generation pacts and movements; 3, Educational institutions and relations between the generations; 4. Generational memories; 5. The difference between generations; 6. The role of the mass media in relations between generations; 7. Conflict management in intergenerational relations.
