This course focuses on intra-group and inter-group processes occurring in organizational contexts. The theoretical background is provided by Social Identity Theory (SIT; Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and Self-Categorization Theory (SCT; Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher, & Wetherell, 1987). Organizations are the ideal context to study group dynamics, as they are internally structured groups, characterized by power and status hierarchies. In addition, professional identities often play a key role in the definition of the self, above and beyond other social identities, such as those based on gender, ethnicity or nationality. Through the theoretical background provided by SIT and SCT, the course aims to provide students with intellectual skills, such as critical reflection, analysis, and interpretation of intra-group and inter-group dynamics that occur within organizational contexts.
The course will be held in Italian and will cover the following topics:
-organizational identification and organizational commitment
-nested identities within organizations
-intra- and extraorganizational identities
-hierarchical relationships and leadership in groups
-effects of nested levels of categorization in work groups and organizations
-social identities in acquisitions and mergers
-intra-group cooperation and trust
-majority-minority relations within organizations
-effects of stigmatized social identities on performance
