Learning outcomes

The course proposes theoretical elements and methodological tools to evaluate complex situations in social work and to promote effective and measurable actions. The proposal of theoretical models of social work, in particular the unitary model based on the network strategy, has the purpose to orient the broad theoretical knowledge necessary for a rigorous professional work within the methods, the values and the objectives of the profession of the social worker.
Through the active participation of the class (self-reflections, case study …) it is intended to promote self-reflection, aware use of the theoretical elements (fact models), attitude to deepening and to self analysis.

Syllabus

1- The theoretical models of social work: characteristics and functions of the models for professional practise.
2- The main theoretical models of social work from an historical perspective. Relationship with the social politicies, the organizational framework, and the urgency of the social problems.
3- The problem of methodology. Methods and models with respect to the complexity. Definition of complexity.
4- The unitary model based on the network strategy: a possible answer to the complexity.
5- The role of help and control in the social work.
6- Analysis of complex situations and specific projects: problems related to drug addiction, to child deviance in adult age, to psychiatric pathology, or others problems proposed by the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists in a written test and one oral. For the written test the teacher requires the analysis of a complex case chosen among those proposed to the class or found by the student based on his experience. The analysis will have to underline the theoretical and methodological references that can be found in the bibliography on the complex situations indicated for the exam.
