This course focuses on group processes and groups in organizational contexts. The first part of the course will examine group processes and intergroup relations, with a special focus on group formation and cohesion, inclusion and identity, decision making, productivity in groups, intergroup relations and conflict. The second part of the course will focus on group processes in organizations. Organizations are the ideal context to study group dynamics, as they are internally structured groups, characterized by power and status hierarchies. In addition, professional identities often play a key role in the definition of the self, above and beyond other social identities, such as those based on gender, ethnicity or nationality. The course aims to provide students with intellectual skills, such as critical reflection, analysis, and interpretation of intra-group and inter-group dynamics, especially those occurring within organizational contexts. Students will learn how to observe groups and to understand their dynamics; they will have a firm grasp of the main theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of groups, and will learn how to how to successfully lead and improve group processes.
