Basis and Teaching of Geography - Fondamenti e didattica della geografia (2015/2016)

Learning outcomes

The course is structured in two modules: A- basics of geography; B-didactics of geography

Module A – Basics
At the end of this module students will know the theoretical framework of geography (main phases of its historical evolution, epistemological, conceptual and methodological bases, topics and problems). The aim is to acquire the fundamental knowledge of geography necessary to set up teaching.

Module B – Didactics
Educational objectives
At the end of this module students will be able to organize and carry out an effective didactics of geography in nursery school and primary school.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of geography and didactics.

Module A – Basics
- the different elements of the geographical reality.
- methods, tasks and tools of geography
- the main paradigms characterizing the historical evolution of the geographical science.
- geographical concepts: environment, landscape, place, space, territory, region.
- Geography and geographies: concepts, topics/problems, geographical areas.
- Cartography.
- Sources.
- Geographical Associations and related pubblications.
- Geography and other sciences.


Module B – Didactics
- The educational value of geographical knowledge
- The curriculum according to the dispositions of law
- The didactic design of geographical knowledge
- The didactic use of the main tools and sources of/for geography
- Field trips for geographical education
- Professional updating


Didactic approach
Interactive lessons, group work, seminars, possible excursion.

Language
Italian. During the first meetings the ability to access materials in other languages will be assessed.

Written test (open-ended).
In the evaluation will be considered the knowledge acquired, the correct use of geographical terms, the grammatical correctness, the syntactic competence.
