Learning outcomes

The aim’s course is to analyze the causes of the crisis of reading and to study the theories and practices necessary to create regular and passionate readers, in other words children who read in their free time and in school library.

Syllabus

The crisis of reading in Italy and its connection with the generation of "digital natives".
The aim of a high quality reading education and reading promotion based on children’s literature.
Attitudes, habits and skills that are needed to create regular and critical readers.
Motivations to reading and reading pleasure.
Reading and expressive literary reading in aloud voice of the teacher: theory, functions and operating procedures.
How to read novels and picture books.
How to understand and interpret a text in the contest of reading education: theoretical and practical proposals.
The reader as critical recipients of the book.
Reading promotions: theoretical aspects; practical applications and extracurricular activities; contemporary problems and operational proposals.
How to use conversation to create a critical reader.
Critical analysis of school projects regarding reading promotion and reading education.
The School Library: international guidelines; examples of excellence.
Best practices in Italy.
Role and functions of the school library; cataloging and spaces.


The program will be communicated at the beginning of the course (online board) in order to offer to students the best proposals within the literature on this topic.
Further readings for students who do not attend the course.


The course program follows a teaching method which while including various didactic methods: frontal lessons, reading aloud performances, slide presentations, image, audio and video presentations, and so on.
The course will NOT be a mere summary of the contents of the books: for this reason is highly recommended to attend the lectures or at least part of them.
Details regarding integrative and external lessons will be given during the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of two-hours’ written text based on argumentative and reflexive open-questions. This program will be valid for one academic year 2013/2014, this is to say until February 2017.
