At the end of the course, students will be able to: Understand and discuss the main concepts and theoretical approaches related to culture and communication in the social sciences. Critically analyze the role of digital media in the construction of identities and in the representation of social problems. Apply the main social research techniques to the study of digital media and communications. Use methods and tools for the analysis of social media and social networks.
The course will cover a wide range of topics related to culture and communication, with a particular focus on new media, divided into seven main topics: Culture: The concept of culture in social sciences, origins and classical theories. Communication theories: exploration of the main sociological theories of communication and their practical application. Media and identity: analysis of digital media in the construction of individual and collective identities. Social problems and media representation: case studies regarding social problems and the use of media as a tool for social change. Research techniques: introduction to social research techniques and their application in digital media. Media analysis: Methods of analysis of social media and social networks, use of specific software. Content production: creation of multimedia content, also with the use of generative AI tools.
