Learning outcomes

MM: Lezione

The course is coherent to the general objectives of the degree program of Social Work. It provides students with the knowledge and awareness of basics ethics and values perspectives of Social Work, both in Italy and in an international framework. Professional principles and basic elements will be contextualized in relation to the historical and philosophical environment that allowed the creation and development of the professional role of Social Worker. Students’ interactions will be stimulated: they will apply reflexivity in order to critically situate themselves within the most debated issues of professional ethics, both theoretical and practical. They will learn how to use the Code of Professional Ethics as the starting point, guide and background of their professional actions. At the end of the course, students have to demonstrate the understanding of the values of the Social Work stated in the Italian Code of Professional Ethics and to know how to situate themselves, within the context of the Welfare system, from an ethical perspective.

The course deals with the following topics: 1. History of Social Work: historical perspective with a focus on the Italian case. 2. Recognition of emerging and latent social needs; the answers and interventions within different social and cultural contexts. 3. Social Work values, Social Work operative principles. 4. Social Work aims, purposes, functions: the importance of contexts, organizations, and professional mandate. 5. Features of a registered profession (I): professional community, public service, ligitimization. 6. Features of a registered profession (II):professional Ethics, lifelong education. 7. Features of a registered profession (III): the NEW Code of Ethics. 8. Critical and internationla challenges: Honourability , accountability, ethical development, complaint and regulamentation in different nations.

The written part consists of 18 closed-questions (about Social Work history and fundaments, values and principles) and 2 open questions in which students are required to discuss critical issues of the profession. During the oral test students will present one chapter of the Handbook of Social Work Ethics and Values, with their own reflexive positioning on the topic.
