Syllabus

The course is divided up into two moduli devoted to the foundations of logic and to scientific discourse respectively. The first module is divided into two parts. The first part, constituted by the first 4 lectures, explores the fundamental concepts of the theory of argumentation and introduces students to the organization of an argumentative text. The second part, covering 6 lectures, deals with the pedagogical and formative value of critical thinking and its implementation in the educative paths of primary school.

Assessment methods and criteria

To successfully complete the course, students are requested to produce an assignment consisting in a project on the development of critical thinking in one or more classes of primary school.
The project must include the following points:

Introduction and motivation in which the importance of the critical thinking is discussed
description of the classes
presentation and discussion of the methodologies deployed

detailed description of the project including expected results, timetable, and activities
preparation of material to be used in the project
description of the assessment procedures

The evaluation of the project will focus on:

coherence between project and objectives
capacity to justify the project design
methodological variety
creativity
consistency with the material discussed in classes
variety of material deployed
appropriateness of the assessment procedures

The assignment must be delivered at least 14 days before the exam on Moodle. The oral exam will cover the material discussed in classes and will assess linguistic as well as conceptual competency. The final grade of the first module will result from the assessment (40%) and the oral exam (60%).
