Learning outcomes

-Recognize the evidences of the theory of evolution and to be able to describe its mechanisms of action;
-Recognize, describe and classify the main groups of living organisms (bacteria, unicellular eukaryota, fungi, algae, main animal and plant phyla)
-recognize the main levels of living organism organization (cells, tissues, organs when appropriate, whole organisms);
-describe the main compartments of eukaryotic cells and their functions;
-describe the global relationships between organisms and between organisms and environment;
-set up simple laboratory experiences to show and demonstrate the scientific method;
-translate the acquired competences and knowledge in languages suitable to children of different ages;
-use an appropriate language.


Syllabus

-The origin and the evolution of the species;
-the chemistry of life and cell metabolism;
-the cell theory;
-structure of prokaryotic cell;
-structure of eukaryotic cell;
-the diversity of the living organisms: bacteria; protists; algae; unicellular and pluricellular fungi; animals; plants;
-the relationships between the living organisms and the trophic networks;
-set up of simple experiments to show how the scientific method works.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination will be an oral test aimed to verify :
-the overall degree of knowledge of the issues of this course;
-the ability to translate the scientific concepts in languages suitable to children with different ages;
-the scientific language skills.
