Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide the conceptual and methodological basis needed to analyze contextual characteristics, and training and development activities, in a comparative perspective, and to evaluate the relevance, adaptability or transferability of principles, methods and modes of intervention between contexts (local, national and international).

At the end of the course, the student should be able to know and understand the principles of comparison and their application to the analysis of contexts, and of training and development interventions, and to apply knowledge and understanding derived from comparative analysis to the development of training interventions (at local, national and international levels).

Syllabus

The curriculum is structured in 3 modules; The first module covers preparatory topics to the next module; The third module supports the preparation of the final exams:

Module 1 (approximately 4 lessons): Introduction
• What is comparative education
• Historical considerations on comparative education developments
• The areas of application

Module 2 (approximately 6 lessons): Comparative Research
• Methodological approaches
• Units of analysis
• Educational, training and skills development policies
• Educational, training and skills development systems and interventions

Module 3 (approximately 2 lessons): The production of a comparative essay
• Choice of theme
• Search, validity and appropriateness of sources of information
• Describe, analyze, and argue

In addition to the reference texts specified below, other recommended readings will be made available through the e-learning platform of the course, or distributed in the classroom.

TEACHING APPROACH

Teaching approach with Attending students consists of:
- frontal lessons devoted to the transmission of basic notions
- teacher-student interaction, devoted to the sharing and re-elaboration of previous knowledge, as well as the knowledge gained during the frontal lessons and the individual study,
- work in small groups to be performed in the classroom, but with individual preparation / study by the students, according to the instructions given by the teacher.

Attending students will be able to carry out in itinere verifications of the acquired knowledge by completing an anonymous questionnaire online at the end of modules 1 and 2. The correctness of the answers to the questionnaires will be discussed in the class at the beginning of the next module. This will give students the opportunity to independently assess the state of the acquired knowledge, as well as the opportunity to ask for clarification, if necessary.

Attending students are required to:
- ensure continuity of classroom attendance,
- be present for the whole lesson (except under unforeseen circumstances).

The didactic approach with Non-attending students consists of:
- support for individual study and preparation for final examinations in meetings with the teacher, to be agreed at the request of the student (s), possibly during office hours.

Non-attending students are, however, required to notify the teacher of their presence at the beginning of the course, and will have the opportunity to carry out in itinere verification of the acquired knowledge by completing an online self-assessment questionnaire, which will be made available at the end of modules 1 and 2.

All students (Attending and Non-attending) are required to enroll in the e-learning platform of teaching in order to:
- have access to the teaching material that will be available during the course,
- receive any updates and additional information about the course through your institutional email (@ studenti.univr.it),
- access to the forum, where, in relation to teaching, the following can be posted: 1) general announcements and news by the teacher, and 2) requests for clarification and / or general information from the students.

The titles of the sections and their length in the number of pages are as follows:
• Cover (1 page), including name, surname, student identification number, title of the paper, course nomenclature and ID.
• Introduction (1 page)
• Conceptual framework / theory (2 pages)
• Context information on the territories, countries or geographic areas subject to study, and on systems of education, training or skills development analyzed (2 pages)
• Critical review of existing research literature (5 pages citing at least 6 articles or chapters)
• Conclusion and prospects for future research (1 page)

The paper must respect the following editorial features:
- Page Margins: High and Low 2.5; Right and left 3
- Font: Times New Roman
- font size: 12
- Interline: 1.5

The paper must be submitted electronically, ollowing the instructions that will be communicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course, at least 2 weeks in advance of the date of appeal in which the student intends to perform the oral presentation.

ORAL PRESENTATION

Using PowerPoint, students will have to present the essentials of their final workout in a 15 minute presentation to be held on the date of appeal.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSESSMENT

The paper is aimed at verifying:
- the ability to use and link the acquired knowledge;
- the ability to structure a written text of a comparative nature;
- the ability to analyse and argument;
- the property of language;
- the ability to locate, use, and appropriately cite the sources of information.

The oral presentation is intended to verify the ability to communicate to third parties, in a synthetic, clear and effective manner, the choice and relevance of the subject covered in the paper as well as the knowledge acquired through its production.
