Learning outcomes

•Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student should
– know the basic principles of the axiomatic approach to geometry
– be familiar with the main geometric figures (triangles, quadrilaterals, regular polygons)
– know the abstract concept of measure, not linked to the choice of a particular unit such as the meter
– know the bases about area and how to apply them in proofs such as for Pythagoras' theorem
– know how to handle simple graphs
– know the concept of algorithm and recursion
– be familiar with the basics of probability and the main tools of statistics (average, median, mode and variance)

• Applying knowledge and understanding

Scuola dell'infanzia
At the end of the course the future teachers will be able to present children with learning paths in mathematics based on modelization of natural behaviors (measure) or on heuristic examination of situations (probability) in order to begin a reflection about the connections between counting and measuring.

Scuola primaria
At the end of the course the future teachers will be able to present children with learning paths in mathematics based on modelization of natural behaviors (measure) or on heuristic examination of situations (probability) in oder to make them mathematically more rigorous; moreover they will be able to guide children to overcome preconceptions

• Making judgements
At the end of the course the students will have acquired a critic and analytic attitude that makes them able to put at stake beliefs and spontaneous ideas

• Communication skills
At the end of the course the students will be able to employ a rigorous and appropriate language for mathematics

• Learning skills
At the end of the course the students will be able to find in autonomy didactic material fit for build learning paths in mathematics

Syllabus

Program
The course will be based on plane geometry, algorithms for computations and recursion, probability and statistics

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of mathematics

Methods
The topics are presented with slides and on the blackboard
The e-learning site for the course is active, where to find all slides and the material necessary for preparing the exam

Assessment methods and criteria

The final evaluation will consist in a written test, with solution of exercises on the theory presented in the course and in the proposal of a didactic activity.

The student should prove they
– have understood the mathematical concepts treated
– are able to propose children exploratory activities related to the mathematical concepts treated
– know how to employ correct, appropriate and rigorous language
