Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce students to the study of motivation and emotions as psychological functions regulating human behaviour. Knowing the basic concepts in these fields will help the students to understand the role of various motivational factors and in particular of affectivity in human behavior. Moreover, the course will also focus on the importance of these factors in various situations, in order to shed light on possible strategies to improve the motivational state.

• Dynamic psychology with the main focus on motivational systems
• Istincts, drives, needs and the person-environment relationship
• Motivation and motive: Achievement motivation, Leadership motivation and Affiliation motivation
• Intrinsic motivation: the Flow experience and Sensation seeking
• Volition and Decision making
• Implicit motives and Self-attributed motives
• Motivation assessment
• Subjective wellbeing and positive emotions: fitting motives and goals
• Emotions and motivation as interdependent concepts
• Feelings and emotion expressions and main theories about emotions
• Emotions and memory: how feelings elicited by past events might affect future personal choices
• The regulation of emotion
• The social sharing of emotions: why do people share their feelings?
