Learning outcomes

The course aims to promote a reflection on the concept of deviance, its various meanings. Moreover, the course will try to explain the role of social politics and social istitutions. In particular, it will analyse the istitutional labelling process as the cause for deviance. Finally, It will to propose a remark on the meaning (ambivalent?) of the educative actions and the social programs against deviance.

Syllabus

Initially, the course will analyse the main sociological theories systems about deviance. Then, it will learn about the Labelling Theory and the Erving Goffman’s Drammaturgical Perpspective on the origin and the meaning of both the deviant role and the mechanisms of social control. Finally, we will try expand our remark towards the relationship exitsting between marginality, deviance and the ability of the social contest to produce social inclusion.
