Learning outcomes

Within a reflection which aims at understanding what being “adults” really means, besides the roles that are normally played by adults, the course on Adults’ Education (EdA) aims firstly at making clear the sense and the depth of today’s adult life crisis and at outlining a possibile path of analysis in search of a solution. Grounding on the theories which give some clues towards the understanding and interpretation of adult life, the course – following last year’s reflections – identifies the inner-quest as a priviledged route to think over the controversial topic of adult’s “maturity”, together with the possibility of restoring a more conscious and responsable way of excercising one’s own roles, particularly the ones that are connected to work and profession.
In outlining this path, the course will review the pedagogical basics and the articulations of EdA, together with the adults’ learning processes and the role of motivation. The topic of “education” will be particularly highlighted, with reference to the developments in professional education and its progressive interlinking with cultural and humanistic education.

Syllabus

The course will deal with the following topics:
 Adult life crisis, between stability and change;
 When one becomes “adult”: the question of “maturity”;
 The adult in search of him/herself, between plurality of roles and interior identity;
 Pedagogical basis and areas of intervention in adults’ education;
 Adults’ learning and change processes;
 Professional education and humanistic education: a complementary relation;
 Work and professional ethics, work and self-realisation.

Assessment methods and criteria

Both attending and non-attending students are examined on the same programme. The exam consists of a three-hours’ written test. It consists of 5 open, argumentative, reflexive questions. A further optional question will deal with the optional text chosen for personal study. Students answer the sixth question only after answering the other five, if they wish; moreover, a further integrating oral examination can be given, upon agreement with the teacher.
Exam scores will be registered on given days, which will be communicated on the exam day. After the written test the teacher is available to discuss the results with students during his tutoring hours.
