Learning outcomes

History of Religions is both an historical and religious discipline. It’s a research based on positive-inductive investigation, philology and comparison. Terms like “religion” and “religious” are estended by historian to universal words: religion becomes a concrete universal.

Syllabus

Contents of the course:
1. Preliminary section. Historical acquaintance of different kinds of religion and of the issues that appear connected to the development of the discipline `till our days.
2. Monographic section. The debate on monotheism. The course aims at investigating, from an historical-comparative perspective, the issue of the relationship between polytheism-henotheism-monolatry and monotheism in the historical-religious historiography, with particular reference to Raffaele Petazzoni’s studies. Reading of a mystical text as historical source.
