Doctorate research program

A multi-dimensional assessment of (a)typical developmental trajectories of pragmatic language development in preschoolers with and without pragmatic language impairment: A mixed methods study Purpose: The last three decades have

witnessed a substantial and intensive production of knowledge concerning the assessment of pragmatic language development (PLD) and the diagnosis of pragmatic language impairment (PLI) in children and adults. However, this produced evidence is mixed and contradictory. It is not clear what precisely a researcher could call a deficit related to PLI, what to assess and how to diagnose it best! That being said, this study attempts to sort out this confusion by searching for competing explanations in the existing literature.Building upon this existing argument, this study asks: (1) What concepts, models, and tests are used to assess PLD and diagnose PLI in ‎preschoolers with (a)typical development over the last four decades?, (2) What is the diagnostic accuracy of currently available formal,
Methods : The pragmatic worldview is selected to guide this study. Consistent with this worldview, the exploratory sequential design is chosen to conduct all the research steps for this study. Within this design, both the instrument and the taxonomy development models match the raised questions. The data collection will include four phases. These are: (1) the scoping review (ScR) to answer the first question concerning the conceptualisation of the PLD and PLI, (2) the diagnostic test accuracy review (DAT Review) concerning the quality of the existing tests to assess PLD and diagnose PLI, (3) the instrument development phase concerning the validation of the formal and informal tools to assess PLD and diagnose PLI,

Keywords : Pragmatic language impairment, pragmatic language development, assessment, diagnosis, biopsychosocial model, preschoolers, Italy
