From 2005 to 2020, I carried out ethnographic research in Turkey, dealing mainly with contemporary Islamic movements, Sufism, and religiously inspired forms of civic engagement. Since 2020, I have opened a new field of research on Islam in Italy, on new generations of Muslim children of migrants, investigating their relationship with 'Italianness' and the issues of racism and Islamophobia. This line of research continues with my participation as the local unit coordinator of a PRIN project on Islam in Italy (2023-2025). I am opening a new field of research on Islam in Central Asia in the context of an international research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2022-2027) in which I participate as a Senior Research Associate. I have authored several publications in international and national journals, including HAU - Journal of Ethnographic Theory, Anthropology & Education Quarterly, Culture and Religion, Ethnicities, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, ANUAC, Antropologia Pubblica, Etnoantropologia, Dada e La Ricerca Folklorica. My latest monograph is Reading Islam: Life and Politics of Brotherhood in Modern Turkey (Boston and Leiden: Brill, 2020), and my last co-edited (with Lili Di Puppo) special issue of HAU - Journal of Ethnographic Theory (2024) is titled "Divine Presence: Muslim Ontologies, Anthropology, Transcendence". I am also currently editing the Oxford Handbook of Religion in Turkey (together with Caroline Tee and Philip Dorroll) (already available online (https://academic.oup.com/edited-volume/55832). I am the founder and coordinator of the Muslim Worlds Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA): https://easaonline.org/networks/mwn/ and scientific head of the research group ‘Anthropology of Islam and Muslim Worlds’ at the Centre for Ethnographic Research and Applied Anthropology ‘Francesca Cappelletto’ (CREAa), Department of Human Sciences - University of Verona.
