Learning outcomes

Learning purpose: The course aims at a critical analysis of the cultural identity claim movements, with the aim to put out elements of similarity and differences with the struggles for recognition. Although the movements of defense of cultural identities can be traced within the wider riverbed of struggles for recognition, the different articulation between individual rights and collective rights is the hallmark of the two movements, with a view to promoting multicultural policies not it can be overlooked and omitted.
The workshop aims to give to the students the cognitive tools to develop a personal and critical approach to the theme of recognition, conjugated to its various implications: individual rights vs collective rights; community vs society; neo-communitarian vs contractualism; individual freedom and gender perspective, communitas vs immunitas; justice and equity.

Syllabus

Course programme: From the "struggles for recognition" can be a first step to open a reflection on the sense of belonging, of rootedness in the late modern society. In the cultural debate, it emerges the centrality of the concept of community, rooted in a world of life, rather than space is relational and oriented according to the direction, in which the differences more than balance out and confused tend to identify.

During the course will be presented the most relevant theories on justice, equality, diversity, the concept of dignity and decent life.

Frequency is compulsory.

Didactic Modes: After introducing the lecturer on multiculturalism and recognition struggles, each student will develop a critical analysis of one of the topics discussed in the lab, starting with reading one of the texts included in the list. The presentation, oral, also with slide support, will be discussed within the group of participants.

Assessment methods and criteria

Methods of assessment:
Presentation and discussion with all laboratory participants of one of the selected texts in the following list. The presentation is individual.
At the end of each discussion, a thirty-one vote will be given to the student who submitted the presentation.
