Learning outcomes

The course deals with institutional communication and in particular it will focus on inter institutional communications and on communications between institutions and civil society. The topic will be framed by two different perspective. The first one will be provided by sociology of organization. Through an analysis of organizational aspects, especially those connected with organizational cultures and organizational sense making, the course will put a light on those elements, often removed or forgotten, that play profound influence on public communications. The second perspective will be provided by sociology of communication. Discussing the empirical examples of political communications and social communications, the course will identify and analyze the peculiar traits and problems of the different forms of public communication.

Syllabus

PART ONE
After having defined what is an organization, the first part of the course will be focused on the specific features of organizational life. In particular it will deal with those aspects of cultural and symbolic dimensions of institutions which play a profound influence in defining their communicative strategies.

PREREQUISITES:
To fully understand the contents of the first part of the course no particular knowledge is needed exception made for some very general notions of sociology.

PART TWO
The second part of the course will deal with institutional communicative actions. After having analyzed the different elements which are involved in public communications processes, the course will refer to two distinct empirical examples, one provided by the political communications and the other provided by social comminications

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will consist of a written test. The candidate will have to answer to 4 open questions in 2 hours of time. Three questions will deal with the topics presented and discussed during the course. The fourth question will try to elicit the critical analysis skills of the candidates. More clearly, the students will be asked to provide a personal reflection on some topics treated during the course (a comparison, a critical comment, an empirical exemplificaton, etc.)

EVALUATION CRITERIA:
- the degree of comprehension of the discipline;
- the degree of comprehension of the single concepts;
- the capacity of presenting theoretical problems;
- the mastery of the disciplinary lexicon;
- the capacity to connect different topics;
- The capacity to provide powerful empirical exemplification of the theoretical concepts discussed.
