Learning outcomes


The aim of the course is to provide the conceptual and methodological tools to understand and analyze local territorial systems, considered as milieu of economic, social and cultural resources whose organization depends on the action of local subjects (large and small enterprises, public sector …) as well as of the economic, technological and political trends on a global scale. So the characters of human capital and of labor markets also rely on local differences, economic specialization, entrepreneurship and local development dynamics.
At the end of the course students will be able to analyze and represent the socio-economic organization of different territorial systems in order to outline their training needs.

The main concepts, items and methods of Economic Geography
Applied Geography versus Economic Geography and its role for a degree in Organizational Training
Recent dynamics of economic system and globalization: the geographical scenario
Globalization and local development
The spatial organization of industry, deindustrialization, offshoring, reshoring and their impact on labor
Small firms and industrial districts
The multinational firm and the new spatial division of labor
Transportation and infrastructures
The geographical effects of tourism
The city and the urban function
The effect of human action on natural environment
Case studies analysis

Teaching methods: lectures to introduce the main theoretical concepts and the methodological skills to analyze territorial systems; discussion of case studies. The slides of the lessons and further material will be available on the Moodle platform of the University before each lesson.

Assessment methods and criteria

L’esame prevede una prova scritta, costituita da sei domande a risposta aperta relative a tutti gli argomenti contenuti nel programma, formulate in modo che lo studente possa rispondere in maniera sintetica e precisa. Al termine del corso, durante l’ultima lezione, verrà fatta una simulazione dell’esame. A ciascuna domanda è associato un punteggio espresso in 30esimi. Il tempo d’esame è di un’ora.
Per gli studenti frequentanti le domande verteranno sul manuale, sugli approfondimenti dei singoli argomenti e sui casi studio trattati in aula.
Per gli studenti non frequentanti le domande verteranno sul manuale e sul testo di approfondimento sullo sviluppo locale riportato nel programma, il quale va a sostituire la parte relativa ai casi studio affrontati in aula.
Per entrambi, la prova scritta è volta ad accertare la conoscenza degli argomenti in programma e le competenze relative ai metodi di analisi e al linguaggio scientifico della Geografia economica.
