Learning outcomes

The course aims to:
- describe the main lines of the transition from research orientations that move in a objectivistic and rationalistic framework to mostly qualitative orientations turned to open and recursive forms of research,
- identify some relevant qualitative research on vocational education and training in the major search engines and in academic sites,
- understand the main features of the research paradigm named "analysis of educational practice", with particular reference to the trend that refers to the phenomenological method,
- know the main characteristics of the phenomenological method in educational research, linking it to a concrete research process in educational contexts,
- know the main features of a novels based approach in educational research.

Syllabus

The course will deal with the following topics:
- main research topics in education,
- the epistemological framework of doing research about educational practice,
- the research about teaching,
- data collection and analysis methods: the case of "Didactics at work",
- the main resources for educational research in VET context,
- art-based, novels-based educational research.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment modalities:
oral examination. Further details will be provided at the beginning of the course. The assessment will also include an evaluation of a student’s personal work to be approved by the teacher.

Course activities:
- teacher’s lectures. Students active participation will be fostered.
- Group activities on case studies and other practical tasks.
