Learning outcomes

This course aims to provide an introduction to linguistics as a cognitive science, by discussing some aspects of a science of language: language as a historical and cultural entity, language as a system of communication and language as a computational system characterized by the interaction of several distinct modules. At the end, the student should be able to independently address the study of some fundamental texts in linguistics

Syllabus

This course aims to present the fundamental concepts for an analysis of linguistic sounds and of the mental representations of linguistic sounds (phonetics and phonology), for an analysis of the word formation rules (morphology), for an analysis of sentence structure (syntax), for an analysis of the meaning of sentences in isolation and in context (semantics and discourse theory) and for an analysis of language use (pragmatics). A specific issue to be discussed is the relationship between grammar and meaning, in a broad cognitive and semiotic perspective
